Ursuline calls for NEO women artists to submit work by Sept. 23

    September 3, 2020

Ursuline College encourages Northeast Ohio women artists to submit artwork to its Florence O’Donnell Wasmer Gallery to be considered for the exhibition, “The New Masters 2: Women Artists of Northeast Ohio,” which will be on view from November 6, 2020 through January 29, 2021.

Online registration is required at https://bit.ly/31yqJuA, where the gallery is accepting submissions until Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at 11:59 p.m., EST.

This exhibition of work in diverse artistic disciplines will intentionally showcase the creative excellence of emerging and professional women artists, 18 years of age and older, currently residing in the following Ohio counties: Ashland, Ashtabula, Columbiana, Cuyahoga, Erie, Geauga, Huron, Lake, Lorain, Mahoning, Medina, Portage, Richland, Stark, Summit, Trumbull, Tuscarawas, and Wayne.

Guest juror Mary Urbas, director and curator of The Gallery at Lakeland Community College, will select seven works for $2,800 in cash prizes.

Each artist may submit a maximum of three artworks. Artists will be notified of their acceptance on Tuesday, October 6, 2020. Complete details are on the registration site at https://bit.ly/31yqJuA.

As students of art history know, the "Old Masters" were European painters regarded as the best artists before 1800. They were, for the most part, men. Again this fall, Wasmer Gallery will challenge this traditional bias by promoting women artists, the new masters. The College hosted its first New Masters exhibition in 2018. This 2020 show begins a biennial tradition of promoting local women artists.

As a visual dialogue, “The New Masters” will challenge viewers to consider contemporary women’s issues such as race, equity, marriage, motherhood, family, spirituality, rebellion, and empowerment.

A generous $5,000 grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture partially funds the juror stipend, award prizes, and other expenses related to mounting this exhibition. The grant requires that the College raise matching funds.

Closed in March due to the pandemic, Ursuline’s Florence O'Donnell Wasmer Gallery re-opens in a beautiful new home on Nov. 6 to open the “New Masters” exhibition and celebrate its 40th anniversary. The gallery has moved to Ursuline’s Monsignor Mullen Building, the main academic and administrative building facing Lander Road.

The “New Masters’” virtual award ceremony will be Friday, Nov. 6, at 6:00 p.m.. To request an invitation to the Zoom broadcast, call Gallery Director Anna Arnold at 440.646.8121 or email her at aarnold@ursuline.edu.

Beginning Nov. 10, 2020, Wasmer Gallery will open by appointment only, Tuesday-Friday, 12:00-5:00 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 1:30-4:30 p.m. (closed Monday). Sign up for a time to visit by calling Gallery Director Anna Arnold at 440.646.8121 or emailing her at aarnold@ursuline.edu. Or view the "New Masters" exhibition online, starting Nov. 6, at 6:00 p.m. on the College’s Flickr site at flickr.com/photos/ursulinecollege/albums.
