50th Anniversary of Vatican II
Today, October 11, 2012, we celebrate the work of over 2000 theologians who gathered together over a period of three years to establish what is now known as Vatican II. Those present were representative of countries from all over the world rather than those primarily in Europe. Why was the work of the Second Vatican Council so important to the Catholic Church? Below are a few changes that occurred throughout the discussions.
- During Mass, the priest would face the congregation rather than facing the altar.
- Mass would be celebrated in one's native language rather than in Latin.
- The Eucharist, also known as Holy Communion, would be received in the hand rather than in the mouth.
- Laity would become more involved in the Church.
- The Catholic Church would be more accepting of other faiths.
- The architecture of churches would be less ornate.
- The fast before communion was changed from 3 hours to 1 hour prior.
To learn more about the changes listed above, including more about Vatican II and how it changed the Catholic Church, see the items on display in the Library. Also, visit
Riley's Ramblings, to read Patrick Riley's reflections on how Vatican II affected the world during that time and for years to come.

Three online video collections added in the Library
We are excited to announce the Library has acquired access to two new online video collections,
Education in Video and
Filmmakers Library Online. Both of these collections are put together by Alexander Street Press.
Education in Video is an online collection of more than 1000 streaming videos developed specifically for training and developing teachers. The collection includes teaching demonstrations, lectures, documentaries, and primary-source footage of teachers and students in classrooms.
The
Filmakers Library Online is an online collection of award-winning documentaries with relevance across the curriculum—race and gender studies, human rights, globalization and global studies, multiculturalism, international relations, criminal justice, the environment, bioethics, health, political science and current events, psychology, arts, literature, and more. It presents points of view and historical and current experiences from diverse cultures and traditions world-wide. This collection contains 924 titles.
Along with these two new collections, additional titles have been added to the
Counseling and Therapy Online Collection. This is an online collection of videos focusing on the areas of social work, psychotherapy, psychology, and psychiatric counseling. The inclusion of these titles brings the number of online videos in the total collection to 511.
All three collections are available through the Library’s website under
Indexes/Databases. The
Counseling and Therapy Online Collection is also accessible through the Library’s
online catalog by searching your desired topic. We plan soon to also have
Education in Video and the
Filmakers Library Online accessible through the Library’s online catalog .
We invite you to explore these new additions to our holdings, and we hope you find them to be a valuable resource.

Introducing Counseling and Therapy in Video
The Library is happy to announce we have recently gained access to
Counseling and Therapy in Video. This is an online collection of videos focusing in the areas of social work, psychotherapy, psychology, and psychiatric counseling. The collection contains 400 hours of footage and more than 330 videos.
The videos in this collection, drawn from the catalogs of Microtraining Associates, Psychotherapy.net, and the University of Manchester Department of Psychiatry, have been created by a variety of organizations and individuals dedicated to the advancement of education and training in counseling and therapy.
The collection includes counseling sessions and demonstrations, filmed footage of actual therapy sessions, re-enacted therapy sessions, and scripted sessions designed by counseling professionals to illustrate common issues and scenarios that arise during courses of therapy. These videos often include narration and frameworks that put the sessions into theoretical context.
Instruction on this database will be coming in the near future. In the meantime, feel free to explore the videos on your own and use them in your courses.
