Close to Home: Little - Known Perspectives on the Civil War

Celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the End of the Civil War

Timothy Kinsella, Ph.D. will delve into Cleveland’s contribution to the Union effort during the war, including the provision of soldiers and sailors; training grounds; and an array of supplies from steel to clothing, hospitals, and aid societies.

Timothy Kinsella is an Ursuline History Professor and Director of the College’s Master of Arts in Liberal Studies Program.

Sr. Mary Denis Maher, CSA, Ph.D.
will discuss the work of over 600 Sisters from 21 different religious congregations of women who nursed in the Civil War, both for the North and South. 

Sr. Mary Denis Maher is an alumna and former 

faculty member of Ursuline, and is currently an archivist for the Sisters of Charity. Her most significant area of research is her study of the Roman Catholic Sister Nurse in the U.S. Civil War, leading to her book titled To Bind Up the Wounds
