Bob Kane Memorial Exhibit

June 12, 2015
Location: Florence O'Donnell Wasmer Gallery

Ursuline College Hosts Bob Kane Memorial Show Exhibit June 12 - July 31

The Harmon- Meek Gallery of Naples, Florida will present the work of distinguished Shaker Heights High School alum and internationally known artist, Bob Kane, in the show titled the “Bob Kane Memorial Exhibition”. The exhibition kicks off the Harmon- Meek Wasmer Summer Art Series with an Opening Reception on Friday, June 12th from 5 to 9 PM in the Florence O’Donnell Wasmer Gallery on the Ursuline College campus, 2550 Lander Road, Pepper Pike, Ohio.

The energized paintings Bob Kane created over a fifty-year span of time have inspired hundreds of collectors to share in his enthusiasm for life as depicted in the joyful subject matter he chose for his mostly Mediterranean influenced images.

William Meek, owner of the Harmon-Meek Gallery, says, “We choose Ursuline College’s Wasmer Gallery to host this exhibition because he was born in this area, graduating from Shaker Heights High School.” Destined to become a businessman, possibly for his family’s highly respected area business - off to Cornell he embarked only to find that was not his calling in life. He escaped to New York City, much to the dismay of his parents, and would soon find his way into Will Barnet’s painting class at the Art Students League of NY. He would also meet his future beloved wife Eva in that same class.

The most interesting aspect of his artistic career was his ability to balance popular demand for his paintings, often purchased by many distinguished actors and actresses – such as Audrey Hepburn and Al Pacino and with major collectors of modern art such as Joseph H. Hirshhorn and Edward R. Broida (also from Cleveland originally). The major galleries representing his sales exhibitions in the past were the Bertha Schaefer Galleries and Hollis-Taggart Galleries in NYC as well as the Ankrum Gallery in LA. The Harmon-Meek Gallery in Naples, FL. has represented him since 1987 and is sole representative for his estate and provided this exhibition.

Kane has paintings in the permanent collections of nearly fifty University and public art museums including two major oils in the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio Wesleyan University Museum of Art and the Canton Art Museum in Ohio.

This exhibition with fifty works included is the largest collection of his paintings ever assembled. The watercolors were intended as studies, painted on location, and only offered for sale twice before during his lifetime.

Gallery owner William Meek will give a lecture on Bob Kane’s life and work on Friday, June 12 at Wasmer Gallery from 11 AM to 12 PM.
