Join us as we celebrate the freedom to read!

The Ursuline Studies Program, with co-sponsorship provided by the Besse Library, Campus Ministry and the English Department, will host a celebration of reading and freedom for Banned Books Week. A Read Out will be held on Tuesday, September 23 from 10 AM - 2 PM in the Pilla Center.

According to Mimi Pipino, Director of the Ursuline Studies Program, "Banned Books Week reminds us of the power that the gift of intellectual freedom confers. Education and good books open us up to experiences of others who don't live or think as we do; they can make us uncomfortable, and challenge us to examine our values and view of the world. The Read Out gives the Ursuline College community an opportunity to celebrate that freedom—and to read some really great books!"

This year the focus is on comics and graphic novels that have been the target of objections. The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund is a co-supporter, along with the American Library Association, of this year’s event.

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community –- librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types –- in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. For more information, visit ala.org/bbooks.

At the Read Out, you will have the chance to enter a raffle and win a prize! If you are interested in participating as a reader or for more information, please contact the Ursuline Studies Department at 440 646 8110.
