The Clothesline Project: Bearing Witness to Violence Against Women

September 29, 2016
Location: Pilla Atrium

Ursuline College will be the Cuyahoga County host of The Clothesline Project, a national movement highlighting violence against women. On Sept. 29 from noon until 6:00 p.m., community members will be invited to decorate t-shirts with personal messages of empowerment. All supplies will be provided. The shirts will be strung along clotheslines as a dramatic visual representation of the stand against violence within our community. The decorated t-shirt will hang in the Pilla Atrium for a week.

This year’s three event sponsors are each social service providers for survivors of violence: Jewish Family Service Association of Cleveland, Bellefaire JCB and Cleveland Rape Crisis Center. Student members of Ursuline’s Women’s Circle will volunteer at the event.

The Clothesline Project started with 31 shirts hung in Hyannis, Massachusetts in 1990 and has since spread to communities around the world. The purposes of the project are to bear witness to survivors and victims of violence against women, to help with the healing process for survivors and those who have lost loved ones, to raise awareness of the extent of the problem, and to provide a network of support.
