Community Engagement

Since our founding in 1871, Ursuline has been dedicated to serving the community. Beginning with the College’s curriculum, students are immersed in an environment that fosters leadership skills. This unique environment encourages life-long learning and includes opportunities to develop the whole person in preparing leaders for local and global communities. Ursuline students are encouraged to develop their values, find their voices and establish their vision for a stronger future.

The Ursuline community is proud to participate in numerous service opportunities throughout the year. From Volunteer Day to service learning trips are students, faculty, staff and alumnae are dedicated to giving back to the community in Northeast Ohio and beyond. Our community efforts have reached from Pepper Pike to El Salvador.

Community Projects

Habitat for Humanity. In August of 2015, Ursuline College students helped build a Habitat for Humanity house. The home they worked on is being built in honor of Pope Francis and his commitment to social justice. In photo from L-R: Lesley Rosner, Gina Santora, Ashley Santora, Kelli Briggs.

H.E.L.P. Malawi. In March 2014, Ursuline College sent four students and a staff member to Nanthomba Primary School to continue the established sewing partnership started in 2010.  For more information about their experience and H.E.L.P. Malawi, click here.

Umbrellas for Peace. Art Therapy and Counseling student Diane Fleisch Hughes, with help from the alumnae office, hosted Ohio's first Umbrellas for Peace event, a global art project involving painting umbrellas by children and adults. Umbrellas for Peace is a world-wide organization spreading the word of peace. Diane was using this project as her thesis, which was based on the theme of building and strengthening communities using art. For more information about Umbrellas for Peace, click here. The umbrellas were on display at the Beachwood Community Center from July 13 to August 9. For more information about the exhibit, click here.

El Salvador. Students, faculty and alumnae from the Art Therapy and Counseling Department recently went on a service trip tp El Salvador. Their mission was to serve the children in El Salvador who feel disenfranchised and unempowered. Those who have experienced loss, grief, trauma, stress, depression, hopelessness and despair are our target group; however, all were welcome to experience art therapy and counseling groups, sessions, and projects. A Drop in the Bucket. The First Annual Community Meet of Miles was held on September 30, 2012 on the Ursuline College campus. More than 100 people came out to support the event which raised money for 'Drop in the Bucket,' a non-profit organization that builds wells and works to improve sanitation in Africa.Click here for a recap of Meet of Milles.
