Champions of Character

"Please come back anytime!"

Ursuline College was just recently named an NAIA Champions of Character Program Center which means we are recognized as a school who has committed to the initiative of changing the culture of sports. This initiative is designed to instill an understanding of character values in sports by providing the tools for students, athletes, parents and coaches to model appropriate behavior during athletic contests.

Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Character Program addresses character issues more comprehensively than any national program for youth. The program currently reaches thousands of students on nearly 300 campuses as well as the surrounding communities.

Ursuline College shares the core values and resources of the Champions of Character Program with local students, coaches, parents and youth league administrators to promote meaningful change in the culture of sports in their local community.

Through Ursuline College's Program Center, speakers and presentations about the importance of character, both on and off the playing field, are available to local schools, recreation programs, and local organizations. Presentations include Re-defining the Term 'Athlete', The Role of the Parent in Athletics, and Coaching for Significance. These provide models for coaches, parents, and administrators to understand the importance of the five core values - Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Servant Leadership, and Sportsmanship.

As a Champions of Character Institution, the athletic department, coaching staff and student-athletes have received training and are committed to being Champions of Character. We hold our entire staff and our student-athletes to a higher standard to ensure that we always demonstrate the five core values both in the athletic arena and outside.

As part of this initiative, our student-athletes and coaches are also involved in many community service projects. We currently work with the Mayfield Adaptive Program, we adopt a family for the holidays, as well as help local residents with jobs around their houses. Ursuline College Athletics believes it is very important to give back to the community.
