nschorr@ursuline.eduNelson Schorr is entering his eighth year at Ursuline College and continues to guide the program to new heights. In 2009-10, he coached a team that featured the top single-season scorer in program history - Brittany Nair, who averaged 18.2 point per game and scored 546 total points.
In 2007-08, the team made the conference playoffs for the first time in program history and set many school records. Some of those records were: most three point shots made in a season at 215, highest scoring average at 76 points per game, ranked eighth nationally in rebounds per game (43.9), ranked 12th nationally in three point shots made per game with 7.9, and ranked 16th nationally for points scored per game with 76.
The program, under Coach Schorr, has seen a dramatic improvement in a short time with the fast-breaking style that the team is now noted for. Win totals have gone up from 2 to 15 as well as scoring average from 50 points per game to the current school best 76 points per game over the last 5 years. Coach Schorr has also started a J.V. team which plays a 10-15 game schedule against local area programs.
Prior to coming to Ursuline, Coach Schorr was the Head Coach at SUNY Potsdam from 2000-2003. In addition to his duties as the basketball coach, he is also the Director of Intramurals. He resides in Medina with his wife Sharon, son Josh who is 17 and the new additions, twins, Trey and Sydney.
Assistant Coach Jessica Butzer
Jessica Butzer joins the Arrows basketball coaching staff as a graduate assistant. Butzer graduated from Baldwin-Wallace College (Berea, Ohio) with a Bachelor of Arts in Sport Management, and a minor in Marketing. Prior to joining Coach Nelson Schorr at Ursuline, Butzer was the assistant coach with the women’s basketball team at Baldwin-Wallace College.
While pursuing her undergraduate degree at Baldwin-Wallace, she was a member of the women’s varsity basketball team. Butzer was a four-year letter winner, an ALL-OAC player, and an Academic All-OAC Student-Athlete. She was also a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma, National College Athlete Honor Society, the Sport Management Club, Student Athlete Advisory Committee, and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
Assistant Coach Kari Carmody
Coach Carmody has been the assistant coach for the last five seasons. Kari played her senior season of college under Coach Schorr, before joining his coaching staff. She is a teacher in the Medina School District and a graduate of Ursuline College. "Having Kari on the staff gives us a unique perspective due to playing a year with me as her coach. She understands what we want done and because of her playing time with me, she can relate certain things to the players in an easier fashion. Kari is a hard worker and is easy to relate to.
Assistant Coach Val Pratscher
Valerie Pratscher, a 2003 Central Michigan University graduate, returns to Ursuline College as an assistant coach for Nelson Schorr. Val will primarily work with post players while assisting with recruiting. Pratscher enters her sixth year as assistant coach, and has also been a part of some history-making here at Ursuline. She has helped guide the program from the most games won in school history of just two to 15 in two years, while advancing to playoffs for the first time in school history (07-08).
Val is completing her second year as Assistant Director of Admission, where she holds multiple responsibilities as well. She is the new athletics liaison, which coordinates her student tele-counselors (RINGERS), and coordinates the colleges’ overnights. She travels to NW Ohio, southern Michigan, and the Chicago-land area to recruit for the college. Valerie completed her coursework for a master’s degree in Sport Management from Cleveland State University in May of 2008. She is excited for the ‘10-‘11 season to begin and hopes the girls advance to playoffs for the second time in school history.
