“Lydia is dead. But they don’t know this yet.”

This haunting line begins the 2016-17 Common Book, Everything I Never Told You, by Celeste Ng, who spent part of her childhood in Shaker Heights. The novel centers on the Lee family: James, a professor of American popular culture at a small, Midwestern college; Marilyn, whose roles as wife and mother supplanted her youthful ambitions to become a doctor; eldest son Nathan (Nath), middle daughter Lydia, and youngest daughter, Hannah.

The fact of Lydia’s death launches the entire family into a series of crises and recriminations, and the reader into a journey into each member’s past as secrets, lies, miscommunications, and hidden emotions surface.

The novel was a New York Times bestseller, and distinguished as one of the New York Times Book Review’s “A Notable Book of the Year” in 2014.
