The art department offers three BA majors: Studio Art, Visual Communication Design, and Art History.


Studio Art


The BA Major in Studio Art requires 52 credit hours. Students complete Studio Foundation Studies, an elective in a selected studio medium, three art history courses, and courses in professional practices and art and advocacy.

The BA degree in Studio Art rests upon Studio Foundation Studies, a core of courses that offer the language, skills and critique that is common to all fields of the visual arts within the first levels of ceramics, drawing, metals, painting, printmaking, and visual communication design.

Portfolio Review

With the completion of Studio Foundation Studies, Studio Art majors present a portfolio of their best work in order for the department to assess whether they are ready to declare a candidacy in the BA degree.

Upper-level Courses
After passing portfolio review, BA students majoring in Studio Art are expected to complete one studio elective, alongside courses in professional practices and art and advocacy.



Visual Communication Design


The BA Major in Visual Communication Design requires 39 credit hours. Students complete 12 credits of the Studio Foundation, and then present a portfolio of their best work for review in order for the department to assess whether they are ready to declare a candidacy in the BA degree. Upon passing portfolio review, Visual Communication Design majors pursue specific programs using digital equipment, complete at least one internship in the field, and prepare a professional portfolio of work.

Art History


The Art History Major requires 47 credit hours. Students complete 9 credits of the Studio Foundation, work to gain research proficiency in a foreign language, and pursue both general survey and specific art history courses with a stress on research and writing.
